Sooo this afternoon I talked to my sister about the Wizard of Oz. A friend of hers is writing a book about how it had influenced people's childhoods.
Sister: Who was your favorite character when you were a kid?
Me: I dunno... I want to say I probably liked the Tin Man the best. I liked that he was somewhat alienated and unable to relate to others, even if his lack of heart wasn't real.
Sister: How did you feel about Dorothy?
Me: Really not interested in her story, tbh.
Sister: Why?
Me: ...... she was a girl.
Sister: When I was younger, Dorothy was my icon - she was everything I wanted to be as a girl.
Me: Wow... uh. Huh. I'm thinking about David Bowie in Labyrinth.
I just can't believe how obviously genderqueer I've always been but just ignored. Pretty much up until college, I was honestly pretty misogynistic. I knew what I liked, and I didn't like reading books about girls or watching movies about girls or listening to music with female singers. After college, I realized I wanted to be a feminist and had to make a real effort to pay attention to girl stuff, but I still definitely didn't relate to it personally.

Sister: What? It was all about Dorothy. That was the entire story.
